Becoming pastors immediately after our conversion?
In 1 Timothy 3: 2,6 it says: “If anyone aspires to the office of overseer( =bishop=pastor)…He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.” So according to this Scripture we should not try to become pastors in a pulpit immediately after our conversion.
Of course, we can be spreading the gospel without being in the pulpit, at any time of our journey, as laymen; as it says in the following Scripture, which is speaking to all believers: “ Preach the Word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” 2 Timothy 4:2 . And do this wherever you are in your profession!
And of course, we should become learners of the Scriptures. Paul became taught for 16 years ( 3 in Damascus, 13 in obscurity in Tarsus: Acts 9:30, Acts 11: 25), before he was ready for his first missionary journey as an apostle!
From personal experience, it takes about 8-10 years to be ready for solid food of the Word. Otherwise, you can get religious schizophrenia where you get buffeted by the enemy easily! And it is the religious usually who come as sheep to devour the young, when they are real wolves who want to destroy! “ Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” Matthew 7: 15.These first few years, you should be fed with the pure spiritual milk of the Word. I know during my early years of drinking the milk of the Word, the Lord carried me in His arms! And really, if you want to be a pastor, like Paul, you should have walked in your journey, learning the Word, at least 16 years. After 16 years, if you still want to be a pastor, then go for it! “ Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2: 2-3.
PURE SPIRITUAL MILK
“ I fed you with milk, not solid food,
For you were not ready for it.” 1 Corinthians 3: 2.
