SETTING CAPTIVES FREE, PART III.
Deliverance, where a person has been sinned-against, comes in the form of rescue, revoking revenge, transferring of debt to God, after demonic influence has entered and a person’s personality has ended as aggravated by demons of obsession. Where the bondage has come through their own choice, deliverance takes place in the form of confession, repentance, renunciation, restitution after they have gotten to the point of obsession which has been aggravated by demonization.
There are various Scriptures from the gospels, where Jesus is seen empowered by the Spirit, casting out demons and just at His presence the demon-possessed persons get near Him, and thus the demons expose themselves. Then at His command they leave the person with various manifestations, such as convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, such as is the case of the man in the synagogue ( Matthew 8: 23-27); in the epileptic boy narrative ( Mark 9: 14-29) , the boy convulsed and foamed; while the crippled woman just straightened up and praised God! ( Luke 13: 10-17).1
Today as ministers of deliverance, empowered by the Holy Spirit, their presence should just expose the demons. It is the Holy Spirit who will expose them. So whether a minister is in church, and a demon exposes itself to them, they should tell it to “Go” or “To be quiet and leave”, just as the man in the synagogue. If they are asked to pray and deliver, then it would be in a more confined setting, in a separate room, and if they ask the minister to keep it confidential, they should abide by their wishes! And if the ministers are out in the city and a demon-possessed person approaches them, then they should minister right there as Jesus with the Gadarene demoniacs. ( Mark 5: 1-20).
Hayward in ” God’s Cleansing Stream”,2 says that in ministering to people , there are
some key issues to consider in order to have a successful deliverance. For example, as pastors/leaders, they need to be accountable to others in leadership; there should be covering such as prayer covering and a balanced knowledge of the Word, even though *Knowledge by itself does not cut it even though together with a transformed life it is powerful! They should always move in a spirit of love and compassion, and after deliverance, they should teach the person to be led by the Holy Spirit, to teach the Word and to learn new coping habits. The people should feel trust for the leader, that they are not going to be exposed to others, if that is their wishes, that it will be confidential.
Also according to Hayward ,3 there are some pitfalls in ministry of deliverance that can Bring disaster. And the root of all these pitfalls lie on pride: which can cause the minister to fall in the trap which he/she was trying to bring freedom to the person being ministered. Some pitfalls mentioned by Hayward are the following: believing that only a gifted person can minister deliverance: where a minister likes to make a show of those needing deliverance. They start manipulating and taking advantage of the people: where there is a preoccupation with demons and having excessive conversations with demons. As mentioned earlier, the Scriptures show Jesus telling the demon to be quiet and leave; also where ministers misuse their authority. They should know the Word well enough not to misuse it concerning demons or the demonized person; where the person becomes dependent on minister: the person should become dependent alone on God and His authority after being freed; expecting people to manifest in certain ways: the minister cannot demand a certain physical manifestation to validate deliverance. As seen during Jesus’ ministry, there were convulsions, screams, foaming at the mouth, praising God, to name a few!
