SETTING THE CAPTIVES FREE, PART II.
McNutt in his book “Deliverance from Evil Spirits” 1 says that believers cannot be
possessed, and even it is very rare amongst unbelievers. But that people, whether believers or unbelievers, can become demonized or infested from the outside and inside their beings, where they get attached from a person’s past wounds and traumas into their souls or bodies. McNutt mentions such cases in the Bible, where Ananias, who was a believer, had lied to the Holy Spirit and an evil spirit takes over his heart! This would be called demonization of the soul. Another case in the Bible is Judas, Jesus’ disciple, whom probably could be considered a believer since he had been walking with Jesus, who was under power of Holy Spirit; it is said in John 13:27, that the devil entered him: so was this possession or just demonization? McNutt is not clear on this but this could show a case where a believer becomes demon-possessed, where there is dissipation or removal of the Spirit from him for a while! He does make the point that people like Charles Manson are really possessed even though he says present day cases are rare. I myself don’t think I agree with him on this!
The Holy Spirit comes to abide in a person’s spirit when they first have a born-again experience. A person’s spirit’s lifeline with God is severed by sin which they are all subject to , since they live in a fallen world due to Adam and Eve’s disobedience! But when they have a born-again experience , the Spirit invades their spirit and they are freed or liberated. Of course with sanctification, where they have the Spirit continually refilling their spirits there is the renewing of a person’s minds by the Word which is brought alive by the Spirit in them; so it is a continuous process where there are special encounters which keep liberating them from demonic bondages due to memories of the past, specially where they have been sinned -against. This process grows people from glory to glory. Deliverance events free a person as needed by confession, repentance, renunciation, restitution! ( Coulter’s Lecture 4).2
Pastor Jack Hayford in “Finger of God”3 states that where the Spirit dwells there can abide no evil spirits. I don’t know if I still agree, due to past experience and Scripture: of course, I know that even as believers there can come dissipation of the Spirit such as when a person is continually getting drunk , doing drugs, or there is habitual sinning, and so maybe at this times evil spirits can come and take possession of their spirits. At the same time, it could be as McNutt says, they can come from within a person, and he really does not know how they came to enter, but they are not really possessing a person’s spirit!
