PETER PROFILE: HE SAW THE LORD JESUS AFTER HIS RESURRECTION!

Peter was a Jewish fisherman by trade. When the Lord Jesus started His ministry on earth, He picked Peter as one of His first apostles! He told him He would make him a fisher of men! That was a challenge to him! He gave up everything, in order to follow Him: He was different; he felt an immediate bond with Him! ( Read Matthew 4: 18-19).

He traveled with Him, walking, as He picked the others to make up 12 apostles! He was in awe of Him, watching Him do all those healings and deliverances! It was really amazing! When He told them, after about 3 years, that He was going to suffer and die, he immediately told Him in so many words, “not if I can help it!” He then told him, “ Get thee behind Me, Satan. You are a hindrance.” (Matthew 16:23) for He told him it was necessary to do the Father’s will! He told the Lord Jesus he would go to death with Him! But what He told Peter next really disconcerted him, basically that he would deny Him three times before the cock crowed! (Luke 22:34).

Sure enough, when Peter saw the gravity of what was happening, where He was being whipped, scourged before the crucifixion took place, he denied Him three times as being one of His men! Peter wept in despair when he heard the cock crow after his third denial and saw the pain and hurt in Jesus eyes as He looked at him, still with love! ( Luke 22: 54-62). Peter was scared, but he had dealt treacherously! When He had put the cards out, asking the apostles who they thought He was ( as He never bluntly exposed Himself as God), Peter had answered, “ You are the Christ (Messiah), the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16. He knew Jesus was greater than just a commoner! They had been waiting for the Messiah and He fit that role real perfectly!

He was so depressed after His death; Peter had thought that as Lord, He would be crowned King! He had not expected what appeared to be a senseless tragedy, Him shedding His blood on a cross! But when He resurrected, he became gun-ho and overzealous to carry the message of the gospel specially to the Jews! He became their advocate, as is seen in the book of Acts! Jesus appeared to him and 6 other disciples on the seashore before his Ascension, where He cooked some fish for them.( John 21: 1-14). And after they finished, He asked Peter three times if he really loved Him. By the third time Peter was sad because he felt He did not believe him, and each time He told him words such as, “ Feed My sheep”. ( John 21: 15-19). And He told him to follow Him! He does not know what his future holds, but he knows nobody can change his mind about his Lord and his ministry to the Jews in the world ahead just as Paul’s ministry is to the Gentiles, even though they know that they both can touch both Jew and Gentile alike! ( Read Galatians 2:8).
