MARY AND MARTHA PROFILE: MARY THE WORSHIPPER OF JESUS!

Martha and Mary, (not the mother MARY of Jesus), were sisters who did not see eye to eye on what was most important in life. They were also disciples and friends of the Lord Jesus, who came to their home at times to visit them, Mary, Martha and their brother Lazarus. Lazarus was the one Jesus had raised from the dead!

There was the occasion when Jesus came to their village, visiting their home: Mary was completely enthralled at His teachings, seating at His feet and absorbing all that He had to say. She was like a sponge. It was an incredible experience: He was so beautiful and radical. Martha, then came to scold Mary for not being involved in the homemaking duties, basically saying she was wasting her time and that she was the one doing something fruitful because she was preparing the meal! She would be what you would call a workaholic with no time to feed her spirit from the Master Himself! ( Read Luke 10:38-40).

Jesus did come to Mary’s defense telling her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42). Martha had been distracted with much serving, ignoring the matters of the soul and spirit! But later she did take long strides in balancing her life!

Six days before the Passover, Jesus was at their home in Bethany. Mary anointed the feet of Jesus with costly spikenard oil which was in preparation for His betrayal. She didn’t know this was what she was doing but she was worshipping Jesus this way : she poured the oil at His feet and then dried it up with her hair! Judas Iscariot, Jesus disciple, who would betray Him, asked her why she was doing this, since this was costly oil and that it should have been sold and the money given to the poor. But it wasn’t because he cared for the poor but because he was the one who kept the money box and was a thief who wanted to take the money! So Mary was doing this in preparation for His death, without knowing it, and this was a way of her worshipping Him and adoring Him. Jesus did tell Iscariot to leave her alone for she had kept it for His burial. ( JOHN 12: 1-7).
