The Lord a jealous God?

The Word says God is jealous for us, that we are to give our first and all to Him! He says in Revelations 21: 3 that He will be our God while we be His people: “He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.” He does not want for us to turn to other idols, to take our hearts away from Him!

In the 10 commandments, in Exodus 20: 5 it says : “You shall not bow down to them or serve them ( idols.) For l, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”. In Deuteronomy 4: 23-24 it says: Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you….for the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous’ God.” Anything that takes our eyes or hearts away from covenant living God, is an idol!

In Isaiah 54: 5-6 it says that the Lord is the husband to the widower, in other words to all the single persons. While we are single, He will be our protector, provider, the One who will keep us from straying to other gods. So just because we are single we are not to turn to other idols! He will be our soul, spirit, financial provider husband! But even if we are married, we need to bow down in our hearts first to Him as He is a jealous God, He is first!

Some might say, ‘so it is okay for us to get jealous?’ We usually get jealous for selfish reasons, carrying envy in our hearts, more like covetousness! And that’s one of the 10 commandments not to do! In other words, jealous for what others have! In Proverbs 23: 11 it says: “do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day.” In Romans 13:13-14 it also says : “Let us walk properly , as in the day, … not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” In other words, we should only be jealous for the salvation of the Lord, so that they seek the Lord Jesus with all their heart, so they be zealous for His things, specially salvation.
