WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT MERCY VS JUSTICE?
The Word says that God’s mercies are new every morning: “The Lord’s unfailing love never fails, and his compassion never fails. Every morning his loving-kindnesses are renewed.” Lamentations 3:22-23. In His mercy toward a fallen earth, He sent His Son to die for us on the cross! We as sinners are worthy of death, but His gift to us is eternal life for those of us who believe in Him: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23.
Jesus says He did not come to abolish the law, but He came to fulfill the law and the prophets! “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Matthew 5:17. So God is both just and merciful! The law (the Ten Commandments and other laws for Israel) came 430 years after the promise had been made to Abraham and his Seed (Jesus Christ) by faith. As such, this contract could not be annulled when the law came. The law was added only for the sins of the people and served as a safeguard until Christ came in person so that we would have righteousness by faith, for those who believe in Christ! In other words, those who are not of the promise would be judged by the letter of the law for their sins! (Read Galatians 3:15-29). The law and the prophets testify of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, for all who believe. As we saw, the law is there only for the sins of the people, and the Word says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And as such, we need God’s grace, His undeserved mercies, so that we may be forgiven when we repent and be freed from the oppression of sin! (Read Romans 3:21-24).
It also says that the letter, of any aspect of the Word, kills, but the Spirit gives life: “For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Corinthians 3:6. So we see the life of Christ when the Spirit gives life to the letter! The revelation of Jesus’ truth during every generation is necessary to keep His people in order and alive—in other words, in the righteousness of God! And those who have sinned under the letter of the law, without Christ, will be judged by the letter of the law, and those who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law. (Read Romans 2:12).
God’s goodness wants to lead us to repentance. He will repay each person according to his deeds. Those who persevere in good works, seeking glory, honor, and immortality, will receive eternal life. But those who are selfish, reject the truth, and cling to evil will be punished .This is God’s righteous judgment. (Read Romans 2:4-8.)
