ABOUT ONE OF THE TOPICS OF WISDOM!

Another of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is wisdom! We will see one of the many topics of wisdom which is: ‘why so many translations of the Bible?’ As I became born-again I was blessed to go to a church that was well-grounded in their teaching. It never crossed my mind about why so many translations of the Bible. I just took it by faith that I was listening and reading the inspired Word of God. But there is many people, and you might be one of them, who question this issue and which translation is the right one.

The following is what I learned in Seminary, about what is the goal of interpretation: I think the goal of interpretation is to keep the meaning of Scripture relevant and applicable to whatever time in history it is to be read while conforming to orthodox Christian theology. This requires revelation by the Holy Spirit plus the meaning the biblical author intended with the language of the time it was written on. So in order to understand it, there needs to be reconstruction of the historical time. Also if at any time, where translation occurred from one language to another, or within the same language, we need to ask what was the historical times then, what were the racial, cultural, sexual, and socioeconomic issues of the time.

And in each generation, what was the interpreters’ preunderstandings that he/she brought. Also what the reader’s preunderstandings were, for they can also invent or add a meaning. And of course, to those who interpret both the Old Testament and New Testament, there should be reasoned faith in Jesus Christ so that they follow the Church’s Christian theology that has proved inerrant throughout its history plus allowing new knowledge of the times to enhance Scripture’s meaning as it is decoded by the Holy Spirit.

The reason I believe so , is because the Scriptures have always worked in the crucible of Christian experience, always advancing God’s kingdom throughout history and testifying of God’s activities and truths even today. The translations I grew up in my walk with the Lord was the New King James Version (NKJV) and the New International Version(NIV) ; in the Seminary we used the English Standard Version (ESV). I have used these translations here at 1stspiritual5.com. All of these, and many others, have been approved by the Council of Churches.

GIVE US A HEART OF WISDOM
Teach us to number our days,
