We have seen that the working of miracles is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit ( 1 Corinthians 12:10). In the gospel of John we see seven signs or seven miracles working through the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ after the Spirit fell upon Him as John the Baptist bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him.” ( Jonn 1:32). Then it goes on to say that : “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”( John 1:35).
In other words, as we will see the seven miracles worked out in Jesus’ ministry, (Shown in the gospel of John), would also be able to be worked out by us when Jesus baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and if this is the gift operating in our lives! Even if this is not our own gift, as members of the body, it will be used for our benefit in helping us in our restoration of the broken walls of our personality! So this gift , or any gift of the Holy Spirit , can operate through us or we can be the receivers of the gifts!
Let us now see the seven miracles or signs performed by Jesus in the book of John:
1.Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding in Cana. During the feast all the wine had run out, so His mother Mary, tells Him so. Jesus tells the servants to fill six jars with water and then tells them to draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. The master then praises at such good wine being kept for the end! (John 2:1-11).
2.Jesus heals an official’s son. The official came from Capernaum to Cana where Jesus was, and told Him to come where his son was, who was at the point of death. Jesus told him, “ Go, your son will live.” (John 4:50), and this was enough for the official to believe. He went and was met sometime later by his servants who told him the child was recovering and it happened exactly at the hour when Jesus had spoken the word!
3.Jesus heals an invalid man at a pool called Bethesda. The man had been an invalid for 38 years. Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed and the man answered him yes, that he was trying to get into the pool because he believed it had curative powers. So Jesus told him, “ Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” (John 5:6). At once the man was healed!
4.Jesus feeds 5000 with 5 barley loaves and 2 fish! A large crowd had been following Him and His disciples. There was a boy wo had five barley loaves and two fish, so He told the crowd to sit down and Jesus took the loaves and fish and gave thanks and kept distributing enough for everyone and still there was leftovers! ( John 6: 1-15).
5.Jesus walks on water. The disciples were crossing the sea on a boat and the sea became rough. About 3-4 miles later they saw Jesus walking on the sea coming near the boat. (John 6:16-21). Almost immediately they were on land!
6.Jesus heals a man born blind. The question rises by His disciples of who had sinned and Jesus tells them, no one, only that at that moment of healing the works of God would be displayed! He just spat on the ground and made mud with His saliva and anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and told him, “ Go wash in the pool of Siloam.” (John 9:7), and immediately he saw!
7.Jesus raises Lazarus from death! His friend Lazarus had been dead for 4 days when Jesus told the people to take away the stone that lay against the tomb and He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out” (John 11:43), and he came out all banded up with linen strips. Jesus then told the people to unbind him!
So these are the 7 signs or the working of miracles through Jesus as shown in the Book of John. As was true then, it is true now, for restoration of the broken walls of our souls, and so that Jesus’ glory might be manifested and people will believe! As Jesus said: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do, because I AM going to the Father.”(John 14:12).
