Nehemiah as the picture of the Holy Spirit!
We see in the Book of Nehemiah, in the Old Testament, Nehemiah seeking the King’s favor in order to be sent out to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down and its gates had been destroyed by fire. “ Then I said to them, ‘You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come , let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.’” ( Read Nehemiah 2).
We see Nehemiah recruiting peoples with different gifts willing to accomplish the task; and then we see them all working together rebuilding the walls and the gates even with much mockery and oppression from the enemy. We are one body with many members whose individual gifts accomplish the common good, that is, restoring the walls of our individual personalities all through the Helper, the Holy Spirt, just as was the case of all of Nehemiah’s helpers with their individual gifts restored the walls of Jerusalem.
This is the picture of the Holy Spirit’s person, style, and ministry, sent out by God the Father at the request of King Jesus to be our Helper who will walk beside us to help, to counsel, to teach and to strengthen us. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26).
So we see the Holy Spirit doing the same work as Nehemiah, just in His case restoring the broken walls of our personalities! We have seen that when we repent and are baptized in water we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). But what is the gift of the Holy Spirit? We saw that one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit was speaking in other tongues but we see in the following verses that there are various gifts imparted to different people for the common good, and I believe as needed in rebuilding our broken walls: whether of our hearts, homes, health, finances , dreams, relationships: “Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit;…’To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good… for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit; to another the word of knowledge through he same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).
We saw the disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit in the upper room, and then speaking in other tongues, after being in much prayer and supplication awaiting the promise of the Father. So it follows, that each time we need the Helper to continue restoring the broken walls of our personality, specially after we find opposition in our walk, our part of the deal is to be in much prayer and supplication in order to be freshly filled with the Holy Spirit! “And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 13:52. After all we are the temple of the Holy Spirit and as such we need it to be whole! “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit?” ( 1 Corinthians 6:19). The Helper’s mission is to help us move forward as growing sons and daughters of God Almighty!
