SITTING AT HIS FEET: ON THE QUESTION ABOUT THE LORD’S HOLINESS: WHAT DOES IT MEAN AND HOW DOES IT APPLY TO ME!

We usually get scared of the word holy because it sounds very mystical. When my pastor taught on holiness, he said that when we talk about the Lord being holy it means the Lord is whole, wholly as the person of God, complete. So when the Word says “Be holy, for I Am holy” (1 Peter 1:16), the Lord is saying become whole, complete like Him.

Throughout my walk with the Lord, as a single woman, I learned from the church that abstinence is the way of the Lord. We feel, though, sometimes like the apostle Paul when he says: “For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.”(Romans 7:19). In other words, we are less than perfect! But thank God that He is our Redeemer and He will restore us if we are willing to obey His commands: “But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, for He shall receive me.” (Psalm 49:15).

Abstinence as a single person might be just one aspect of being holy. Being in the presence of the Lord, being just where He is at all times, I feel is the best way to keeping holy, whole. And to know where He is, we need to listen to Him, whether it be about our relationships, or what decisions to make in our careers what church to be our fellowship place, where to go to school, what to accept or not accept, because if we listen to Him that’s where He will go with us!

To be holy just as He is holy, means thinking like Him, feeling like Him, talking like Him, having the same heart about people, things and circumstances like He does. If He is angry we should be angry, if He is weeping we should be weeping, if He is laughing we should be laughing, if He wants to be compassionate we should be compassionate, if He wants to exhort then we should exhort. There is power in being holy because God is Omnipotent: He can make it rain or He can keep it from raining, He can raise or bring down kings and kingdoms! When He chastens us “He does it for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness”(Hebrews 12:10). Because “if we endure, we shall also reign with Him…”(2 Timothy 2:12).
