Anoint is defined in the dictionary as ‘to pour oil upon’. The Scriptures say “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” Psalm 23:5. Oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit , so when we anoint a person with oil in the name of Jesus we are really pouring upon them the Spirit of God in order to accomplish God’s purpose ,with power , thru that person. So when we have the anointing of the Lord, it means that we’ve had the Spirit of God poured in us in order to accomplish God’s mission for our lives!
When we are sick, the Scriptures say to call on the elders of the church so they pray and anoint us with oil in the name of Jesus in order to become well! (Read James 5:14). So here God’s purpose is to bring healing! There’s another Scripture which shows us that having the anointing of the Lord teaches us about everything we need for our walk, while we stay close to Him: “But the anointing that you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about everything—and is true and is no lie, just as it has taught you—abide in Him.” 1 John 2:27. Therefore, ministries of healing or evangelism are highly anointed in order to bring about salvation and people into the Kingdom of God.
We see examples in the Old Testament of how people are anointed by the Lord’s prophets to become kings! We see Samuel, a righteous prophet, anointing Saul as the first king of Israel at the direction and in the name of the Lord. “Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, ‘ Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over His people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies.” 1 Samuel 10:1. But we also see how he loses the anointing when he decides to disobey God during his reign, and so he loses his kingship! So we see here that when we are anointed to accomplish something for God, we need to follow and obey Him closely!
We also see Samuel anointing Israel’s second king, David, as replacement for Saul: “The Lord anointed you king over Israel. And the Lord sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners…and fight against them until they are consumed.’ “ 1 Samuel 15: 17-18. We see David obeying God as a warrior with power ,throughout all his kingship, even though he wasn’t perfect in other areas, and God blessing him!
So we see that for whatever high purpose God anoints us with His Spirit, we need to follow closely by Him, letting His Spirit teach us in all we need to do! And as parents we can anoint our children with wisdom, healing, prosperity, safety and protection from the evil doers in their going ins and outs, and with all the fruit and gifts of the Spirit, no matter what their age is, even as little children!
THE ANOINTED LORD
“And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where, it was written,
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives,
And recovering of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed,
To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ “ Luke 4: 17-19.
